Asymmetries in Perceptual Adjustments to Non-Canonical Pronunciations

چکیده

This paper examines two plausible mechanisms supporting sound category adaptation: directional shifts towards the novel pronunciation or a general relaxation of criteria. Focusing on asymmetries in adaptation to voicing patterns English coronal fricatives, we suggest that typology synchronic experience affect adaptation. A corpus study fricative substitution confirmed North American listeners are more likely be exposed devoiced /z/ than voiced /s/. Across perceptual experiments, test conditions heard naturally produced /s/ critical items within sentences, while control were identical sentences with canonical pronunciations. Perceptual was tested via lexical decision test, /s/, as well alveopalatalized pronunciation, determine whether targeted direction variant reflected relaxation. Results indicate there and word-specific for /z/-devoicing no evidence generalization. Conversely, /s/-voicing generalizing eliciting These results underscore role experiences, support an evaluation stage learning, where assess update representation.

Perceptual adjustments to multiple speakers

Different speakers may pronounce the same sounds very differently, yet listeners have little difficulty perceiving speech accurately. Recent research suggests that listeners adjust their preexisting phonemic categories to accommodate speakers’ pronunciations (perceptual learning). In some cases, these adjustments appear to reflect general changes to phonemic categories, rather than speaker-spec...

Perceptual asymmetries in audition.

Visual feature extraction has been investigated using search experiments. Targets that contain a feature not present in the distractors are easier to detect than if they do not, leading to search asymmetries. If sounds are decomposed into features in the auditory system, there might be asymmetries in analogous tasks. Six experiments investigating this are described. Strong asymmetries were iden...

Dorsal stream contributions to perceptual asymmetries.

Neurologically normal individuals show a bias toward the left side of space, referred to as pseudoneglect due to its similarity to clinical hemispatial neglect. The left bias appears to be stronger in the lower visual field during free-viewing, which could result from preferential dorsal stream processing. The current experiments used modified greyscales tasks, incorporating motion and isolumin...

Compression effects and perceptual asymmetries

This paper reports the results of two English experiments on timing and perception. The finding is that temporal patterns in production correspond to asymmetries in perception. We argue that these phenomena are best described in terms of auditory rather than articulatory representations. The production data concern compression effects, whereby, in syllables with a greater number of segments, ea...

non-corrective approach to pronunciation

the aim of this study has been to find answers for the following questions: 1. what is the effect of immediate correction on students pronunciation errors? 2. what would be the effect of teaching the more rgular patterns of english pronunciation? 3. is there any significant difference between the two methods of dealing with pronuciation errore, i. e., correction and the teaching of the regular ...
